The Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra has only been on sale for a few days, but there's already one customer we know who's unhappy with their watch, due to some fairly rapid peeling of paint on the back of the device.
This report of the chipping was made on Reddit (via Android Authority). There appear to be small chips visible on the surface coating on the bottom of the watch, though the watch has not been used for any kind of exercise or gym work.
At least one other Reddit user has reported the same issue, and it appears to be limited to the grey version of the smartwatch. It seems the Galaxy Watch Ultra's other case colours, white and silver, may not be experiencing the same problem.
It's worth noting that there are very few reports of this issue at the moment and Samsung support has replaced the affected watch. However, it may be worth checking your Galaxy Watch Ultra again, if you've already purchased one.
Look out
We didn't notice any issues with paint chipping or peeling on our own Samsung Galaxy Watch Ultra. In fact, we rate it as “probably Samsung's best watch yet” and will continue to monitor any wear and tear that appears on our model.
It's clear that if the device is going to become a permanent fixture on our list of the best smartwatches, then it needs to be able to hold its finish for much longer than just a few days. This isn't an issue we've seen on competing devices like the Apple Watch Ultra 2.
Samsung is clearly proud of its new high-end smartwatch and has released two images of the device's internal components. In them, most of the circuitry can be seen, along with explanations of each component's function.
There hasn't been any official statement from Samsung regarding the issue yet, but if there's any further news, we'll let you know here. The Galaxy Watch 7 and Galaxy Watch FE were also launched recently and no issues were reported.
