- Windows 11 24h2 has an error that can break the security updates completely
- This only applies to those who have installed using media like a USB stick
- It affects certain versions of Windows 11 24h2 at the end of last year, and the solution is a reinstatement using a newer version
This is very strange: some people who have installed Windows 11 24h2 (which is now being implemented) have not stopped receiving security updates for the desk operating system due to the particular installation package they used.
Confused? I would not blame you, since when this first caught my attention, it made me wonder what the hell could have been happening here.
And in fact, I cannot give that, but the problem here is really quite simple to explain, and it is easy to solve (if it is a bit difficult in terms of taking a long time, and I will return to that later) .
Windows 11 24h2 installation problem: what happened
So, what happened here is that Microsoft has somehow made a disaster of the Windows 11H2 media installation packages that were created based on the October 2024 or November 2024 security updates.
Those would have been used by many people who installed Windows 11 24h2 from scratch in those months, since they were (at that time) the most up -to -date copies of the operating system.
As for the exact problem here, Microsoft explains: “When using the media to install Windows 11, 24h2 version, the device can remain in a state in which it cannot accept more Windows security updates.”
The other key bit here is that mention of 'When using means', which means that this error affects those who used a unit, such as a USB stick or other means such as a DVD, and the media creation tool to install Windows 11.
Other users are not affected here, so if you did not use the media creation tool, this is not a problem that you should worry about. That is, if you installed Windows 11 24h2 through Windows Update within the operating system, then you are erase.
What to do if security updates are broken on your PC
What is quite strange here is that this problem was recognized by Microsoft on December 24, 2024, but has just boarded and marked as 'resolved' on the Windows 11 Status Board of HEATH launch a few days ago.
And the Microsoft Council for that resolution is, frankly, declare the very obvious. Doesn't this problem caused by Windows 11, version 24h2, October 2024 or November 2024 versions of security update? Then, do not use the October 2024 or November 2024 security update versions to install Windows 11.
Thanks for that. I would never have guessed otherwise.
Anyway, in the future, if you are installing Windows 11 24h2 through the media, simply be sure to be using the latest version (and definitely not one that can have from the end of last year).
If Windows 11 24H2 has already installed in this way, and has found the problem by which you can no longer install security updates, which is obviously something bad, leaving it open to the exploits potentially, then you must take measures.
In this case, you must reinstall Windows 11 24h2 and make sure the December 2024 (or posterior) version. This implies executing the same installation process that you carried out when taking 24h2 at the end of last year, just be sure to choose your personal data and applications when executing the installation process, and all you must lose is to expect the reinstatement to be completed.
I say oughtBecause you never know what could happen to undertake any important operation of the operating system, which is certainly a reinstatement. Therefore, you must make a backup of your files before continuing, always.
It is worth noting that Microsoft observes that this error where updates can no longer be installed on the Windows 11 PC “could” happen, so that will not necessarily be the case. Which means that it could be fine, even if I used installation media and the flavors of October or November 2024 of Windows 11 24h2.
That said, this problem could still appear later, in the future, who knows, so prepare to perform a reinstatement at that time.
