Canon has just announced its upcoming camera on its Facebook page and other social media accounts, confirming a release on November 6 at 1am ET / 6am UK / 4pm AEST (i.e. November 5 at 10pm PT).
In the teaser, the camera is mounted on a tripod during blue hour in mountainous terrain and is mostly cropped, but there is enough detail to draw some conclusions.
For one, the lens mounted on the camera is the Canon RF 24-105mm F4L IS USM zoom, which is a full-frame lens.
Then there's the camera silhouette, which has the same profile as the EOS R6 II/EOS R5 II. Since the EOS R5 II is a recent release, taking our Best Camera of the Year 2024 award, it leaves either a successor to the EOS R6 II, presumably called the Canon EOS R6 III, or an entirely new model.
I've been keeping an eye on Canon rumors, and there are enough to suggest that the EOS R6 III may be the next Canon camera we see. If that's the case, it could be the biggest launch of the year for the market leader.
What the rumors say
We don't know for sure what Canon's next camera will be, but if it's an EOS R6 III, what can we expect?
According to recent rumors, the EOS R6 III will rival the Nikon Z6 III and the aging Sony A7 IV (which is rumored to be updated soon with the potential A7 V). It is also expected to feature the same 34.2MP sensor (delivering 32MP stills) as the recent EOS C50.
A jump from 24MP to 32MP would be a decent improvement, especially if the EOS R6 III also shoots 7K open-gate video like the EOS C50, as Canon Rumors suggests. Presumably the sensor will also be stabilized, given that it is an EOS R6 series model, unlike the EOS C50 cinema camera.
Three years between releases would certainly result in performance improvements, especially autofocus and burst shooting. Rumors say that Canon's Dual Pixel CMOS AF II with improved subject detection will be integrated and 40fps burst shooting (using the electronic shutter), with pre-capture.
Putting these potential upgrades together, the EOS R6 III could become one of the most popular full-frame cameras, and I expect it to upset our best camera guide, especially with its expected price of €2,899 (around $3,100 / £2,700 / AU$5,000 based on current market conditions).
