Bose is bringing some good news to owners of its QuietComfort Ultra Earbuds as it has begun rolling out a new firmware update that adds support for Multipoint. This Bluetooth feature allows users to connect the earbuds to two different devices simultaneously and switch between them without any issues.
Imagine being able to join a Zoom meeting on a laptop or desktop computer and, when you're done, be able to continue listening to the music playing on the Spotify app on your phone.
It's a pretty useful feature present in many of the best wireless earbuds on the market, so it's a great addition. In addition to Multipoint, the patch introduces improvements to voice pickup (it's great to see that call quality isn't always the best), connectivity, and various bug fixes for the earbuds.
Bose told us the patch will automatically install in the Bose app on your mobile device, but you can download it manually if you want to beforehand.
Multipoint Installation
When you launch the app, you'll need to connect to your QuietComfort Ultra headphones and navigate to Settings. Then, tap on the Product Update section. The patch you're looking for is version 4.0.20, which brings Multipoint to devices. The software should begin downloading automatically.
Leave the app alone to finish the installation, and although you can put it in the background, do not close it as that will stop the installation.
DigitalTrends has provided some additional information on what happens once the process is complete. Their report states that the headphones will immediately reboot and “reconnect to your phone.” They then instruct users to press the “Source” button.
The Bose app will give you the option to turn on a multipoint connection. You'll then see “a list of previously paired devices, each with its own on/off switch.” Choose the two you want to connect to and you're good to go.
This release allows the earbuds to finally offer a similar listening experience to the company's highly recommended QuietComfort Ultra Headphones. If you're looking for other options, be sure to check out TechRadar's roundup of the best wireless earbuds for 2024.
