The new hands-on engineering sample for the upcoming Asus ROG Ally X reveals some surprising improvements over the original model, which prominent hardware leakers have expanded upon even further.
The Verge recently tested a prototype of the Asus ROG Ally
This was a limited practice, as The Verge's Sean Hollister was unable to turn the device on or use it for an extended period. However, the Asus ROG Ally X is reportedly a black unit instead of white, with improved ergonomics and smaller grips. It is also believed to be heavier due to having a larger battery inside. It's also reportedly thicker at 1.5 inches compared to the original's 1.27 inches.
Then we get into the alleged specs and pricing of the Asus ROG Ally X from hardware leaker MysteryLupin on X (formerly Twitter). The basic specs appear to be almost identical to the first version with an AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme CPU and a 7-inch 1080p 120Hz display. However, there is supposedly a larger 1TB SSD and a staggering 24GB LPDDR5X RAM for the system.

In terms of battery life, the new handheld is rumored to have up to eight hours of battery life. As a frame of reference, the Asus ROG Ally currently features up to a 512GB SSD and 16GB of LPDDR5 RAM clocked at 6400MHz. That means the next system could have double the storage space and significantly more built-in memory. fast. It is rumored to be priced at $700 in the US (around £550, AU$1,050).
The existing Asus ROG Ally is technically capable of around six hours of battery life, but demanding games can seriously drain the battery. It's not an issue unique to the Asus device, as the Steam Deck and Lenovo Legion Go also have this issue, but a larger battery could go a long way toward alleviating it.
It still feels like an iteration on innovation.
From what we can discern from the hands-on notes and hardware leaks, it seems that the Asus ROG Ally X will be more of an intermediate between the current handheld and a true successor. However, we expected that from previous rumors, and if the unit came with double the storage and 24GB of RAM, there is no doubt that it will be a superior experience to the original (although it lacks really interesting updates).
We've seen hardware revisions over the last year in the portable gaming scene, most notably with the release of the Steam Deck OLED about a year after the original. This new model also increased the storage capacity up to 1TB, but featured a much improved and significantly brighter 1000 nit display with HDR that has yet to be surpassed.
Anyway, all will be revealed in a few weeks with the Asus ROG Ally Legion Go. seen. Or, indeed, whether the new device will give Nintendo something to worry about in the field of portable gaming.
We'll keep you posted, of course, but these early signs are quite promising.
