The iMac M3 is one of the best all-in-one computers on the market right now, but while it's a great device (and the M3 chip powers it nicely), the 24-inch display feels cramped. That could be about to change, though, and those who want more screen real estate might be in luck.
Mark Gurman, a reputable leaker and Apple expert at Bloomberg, just wrote a short piece on his expectations for the future of the iMac, and it's enough to raise my hopes a bit. In his Power On newsletter, Gurman states that: “A larger iMac remains something Apple is also exploring, but it's not clear if that will be an M4 product or something coming next year or later.”
Recent rumors They have suggested that an M4 iMac will arrive later this year (as well as MacBook Pro and Mac mini models that include the new chip), and that there will be The M4 is renewed until 2025.
So, according to Gurman, we will see an M4 iMac (likely a refreshed 24-inch version), but probably not a model with a larger display. If it happens, that larger all-in-one PC will likely arrive in 2025, or perhaps later (with whatever M-series CPU is available at that time).
But I want it now!
This is a surprise; Apple has previously said that we will not have a 27-inch iMac on the way, So if Gurman is right, the company has changed its mind. Of course, at this point, Apple is just “exploring” ideas, which is a pretty vague term, so this could all come to nothing and a larger iMac might never make it off the drawing board (if Gurman is right in his assertion in the first place).
I’ve always been a huge iMac fan, and the color schemes of the different versions helped win me over, giving me hope of seeing a more creative side of Apple in the future. While the M3 iMac certainly has its strengths, I was very disappointed that the design remained largely the same, down to the annoying Magic Mouse and that oddly placed charging port on the bottom. Hopefully that will change in the future.
However, while it’s tempting to go with the rumors and start getting excited about a 24-inch iMac refresh later in 2024, it’s a good idea to exercise the usual caution around such speculation – especially the idea of an M4 model with a larger display – as it seems highly unlikely we’ll see that version of the all-in-one this year (particularly given Apple’s previous comments about the 27-inch model). In short, if it does happen, we’ll undoubtedly have to wait quite a while for the rumored full-size iMac.
