AI features are increasingly appearing in the best music streaming services, giving us more personalized listening experiences. And now YouTube Music could join the fight, with a new feature powered by Google Gemini.
As first reported by Android Authority, it looks like a Gemini extension could be on the way to YouTube Music, which will allow you to order Gemini to play music through your YouTube Music account. Apparently it will also improve discovery and search results when searching for music. Although the new feature is not available, it is currently being tested and Android Authority found a way to activate it.
In a demo video featured in their initial report, Android Authority contributor and well-known leaker Assemble Debug set up the Gemini extension for YouTube Music in the Google app v15.17.28.29.arm64.
Once set up, the collaborator used voice prompts to ask Gemini to play some music, and from there, Gemini worked its magic to search for results on YouTube Music. If you don't have the YouTube Music app, Gemini will play music from the YouTube web app.
💯👀🔥YouTube Music extension on gemini will be available soon, probably announced at Google I/O. Please refer to the screenshot for all the details. I shared information on AndroidAuthority about this: #Google #Gemini pic.twitter.com/FuNCf38frjMay 12, 2024
The leaker also took to X (formerly Twitter) to reveal screenshots of the Gemini apps' help page, which lists a number of prompts that can be used to launch YouTube through Gemini.
Standard voice requests included “Show me some rock music”, “Search [song name] by [artist]' and 'Find songs similar to [song name] by [artist]'. According to Android Authority, when the YouTube Music extension is enabled, Gemini will have access to your account data, such as playlists and listening history, which will produce more refined results.
Since the upcoming Google I/O 2024 is likely to reveal new Gemini updates, we expect it to be officially announced at the event. It could mark a new step for Google's AI integration with its music apps, but it will have to do a little more to catch up with Spotify.
Analysis: Spotify still looks like the king of AI (for now)
It's clear that the AI battle between music streaming services is well and truly underway, with all the major platforms pushing for their own unique AI integrations. But Google's speculated YouTube Music extension seems like another way to catch up to Spotify, whose AI integrations have set the gold standard for these features.
As a loyal Spotify user, I firmly believe that its AI integrations and social features are the reasons why it is so popular, despite still will not release its long-awaited level of high-resolution audio. To me, there's nothing that can beat Spotify, and Google's next move appears to be just another way to weigh in on Spotify's success.
What Spotify has achieved is its ability to provide users with personalized experiences, starting its journey into AI with the Spotify AI DJ feature. Despite not providing the service I was hoping for, it's a feature followed by playlists like Blend and, more recently, their Daylist feature which proved to be an incredibly popular feature shared across Instagram.
Until YouTube Music releases a feature more iconic than daily charts, I'm afraid I'll stick with Spotify.
