A major report on the state of the AI industry has revealed some key insights into the potential issues facing businesses and the industry at large as its growth continues to boom following the launch of ChatGPT and other AI models.
WEKA, commissioned by S&P Global Market Intelligence, recently published its Global Trends in AI 2024 report, in which it surveyed more than 1,500 different technology executives and decision-makers on underlying trends across a wide range of topics.
Some of the most interesting data relates to the supply of AI-capable GPUs, almost all of which are made by Nvidia, although companies like AMD and some startups are gaining ground.
The main conclusion, according to WEKA, is that AI applications are “now ubiquitous in companies” – something that most employees can probably already perceive. However, scaling these AI applications is often complicated, mainly due to legacy data architectures.
Generative AI has also taken organizations by storm: The report notes that 88% of organizations “are now actively researching generative AI, far outpacing other AI applications such as prediction models (61%), classification (51%), expert systems (39%) and robotics (30%).”
Nvidia, the corporate world needs you
High-end GPUs are naturally a big focus of the report – having the raw power is critical to being able to do anything with many AI applications.
“Hyperscale public clouds are one route to GPUs, but many are also turning to specialized AI clouds,” he notes. “GPU clouds are emerging as a key place for both training (used by nearly a third, 32% of organizations) and inference (31%).”
All this interest means that orders for Nvidia chips are only increasing.
Interestingly, WEKA highlights the GPU shortage issue in several major Asia-Pacific economies, including India. “India, Taiwan, New Zealand and Australia are most likely to rank GPU availability among their top three challenges to bringing a model to production,” the report’s authors state.
“One of the most striking takeaways from our AI Trends 2024 study is the astonishing rate of change that has occurred since the inception of ChatGPT 3 and the first wave of generative AI models that hit the market in early 2023,” said principal research analyst John Abbott. Blocks and Files.
“In less than two years, generative AI adoption has eclipsed all other AI applications in the enterprise, defining a new cohort of AI leaders and shaping an emerging market of specialized AI and GPU cloud vendors.”
