Retro tech specialist restorer Retrospekt has teamed up with Mattel to create a Barbie Malibu-themed point-and-shoot 35mm camera, matching handbag and two single-use film cameras.
The line of new, low-cost Barbie in Malibu-themed cameras and accessories follows Retrospekt and Mattel's previous collaboration: a Barbie-themed Polaroid 600 camera that launched during Oscar season earlier this year.
Retrospekt already makes a range of “FC-11” 35mm film cameras and the latest Barbie Malibu version expands the diverse collection with bubblegum pink, palm trees and a hint of sunshine. Oh, and it's also adorned with the Barbie logo (see below).
The new 35mm film camera is available now for $59 from the Retrospekt website (about £46 or AU$90), while the matching carry bag costs $29 (about £23 or AU$45). Retrospekt ships internationally and costs are calculated at checkout. Please note that you will need to load the reusable camera with film, so factor in developing and film costs.
The simplicity of point and shoot
Released in time to celebrate Barbie's 65th anniversary, the Retrospekt Malibu Barbie FC-11 35mm film camera is as simple as it gets. Measuring 119mm x 67mm x 44mm, it fits neatly into your pocket or cute camera bag.
It features a 31mm f/9 fixed-focus lens that keeps everything in focus, automatic exposure with a 1/120-second shutter speed designed for ISO 200 and 400 films, and an optional built-in flash that's activated by a switch on the front of the camera.
All you need to do is load a roll of 35mm film and point and shoot. After each shot, wind the film onto the next frame using the film winding dial on the back of the camera. If you want to use the flash, you'll first need to install a AAA battery (not included).
If you like the sound of the Malibu Barbie film camera but aren't sure how often you'll actually use it (though perhaps you just want it as an accessory), there's another option released by Retrospekt on the same day: twin single-use 35mm cameras.
The Barbie and Ken disposable camera set (below) comes preloaded with a roll of 35mm ISO400 color film with 27 exposures, and the package costs $49.
