It appears that the e-waste problem is more widespread and damaging than we thought (even bigger than the Windows 10 end of service), as several reports show the problem on a larger scale.
A new CNET study found that a staggering 75% of adults either have no plan to get rid of old devices or only have a vague but not definitive one.
This supports a new UN report that says e-waste is increasing and devices are being discarded at five times the rate of recycling. As a result, manufacturers have been pressured to make products that last longer and are more affordable in terms of repair (often known as Right to Repair), as well as to build devices using recycled material.
However, once your device stops working completely, it needs to be disposed of properly. While there are several ways to do this, only a few can be considered the best options and will have the least environmental impact.
Sell or trade in your used devices
Most phone carriers and manufacturers offer promotions that allow you to sell or trade in old phones for money or credit toward a new device. Not only is this a great way to get rid of unwanted technology, but said technology will then be repaired and sold as refurbished or recycled by said company.
It also has the advantage that such a device is disposed of properly and does not contribute to toxic runoff, which remains a widespread e-waste problem.
Use a recycling service
Both in-house and third-party recycling services will take your old devices off your hands, either through delivery or pickup services. Some of them even offer bulk services if you need to recycle a large amount.
Not only is recycling much better for the environment, but those parts can be used to create new things, whether it's technology or a completely different item.
Donate them to others/charity
While you may no longer have any use for your old technology, someone might, so donating to people you know or to charities is also a solid option.
Many people cannot afford the technology they need to function in the modern world, and donating to it greatly extends the life of a device, especially when the item is repaired beforehand.
