It's always a treat when blockbuster movie releases finally make their way to streaming services, and this week we see the big money-making monster fighter. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire debut in Max.
Meanwhile, Eddie Murphy returns to duty in Beverly Hills Police: Axel F. on Netflix, while Space Cadet begins streaming on Prime Video. It’s also Shark Week 2024, so there are also plenty of shark-related documentaries to enjoy on Hulu and Disney Plus, if you’ve already exhausted our shark-inspired monster movie recommendations.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire (Max)

Sometimes a movie is so patently ridiculous that it just… plays. Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire – now streaming on Max – is one of those films.
This sequel to the equally absurd Godzilla vs Kong In this film, the movie's titular monsters unite to defeat a colossal threat hidden deep within the Earth. Rebecca Hall, Kaylee Hottle and Brian Tyree Henry reprise their roles from the previous film, as do, of course, Godzilla and Kong.
Dont wait Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire Rewriting the rules of action cinema, but if you're looking for something to help you unwind this weekend, this is undoubtedly one of Max's best films. UK viewers will have to wait a little longer for it to hit streaming services, though.

Beverly Hills Detective: Axel F (Netflix)

30 years after he last donned his blue badge and gun, Eddie Murphy reprises his role as famed Beverly Hills cop Axel Foley in the aptly-titled film. Beverly Hills Police: Axel F. on Netflix.
In this sequel/reboot, Foley is back on the scene when the lives of his daughter, Jane (Taylour Paige), and his former partner, Billy (Judge Reinhold), are threatened. As a result, Foley works with Jane and her ex-boyfriend, Detective Bobby Abbott (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), to uncover a dangerous conspiracy (surprise!).
Critics have described Beverly Hills Police: Axel F. as “formulaic” but “still fun,” so while it may not be one of the best Netflix movies, it sounds like something worth watching for fans of the current franchise.

Space Cadet (Prime Video)

Continuing with this week's theme of thoughtful, slow-paced independent films (not…) is Space Cadet on Prime Video.
This made-for-streaming movie stars Emma Roberts, a party girl from Florida whose fabricated resume lands her a spot in NASA's astronaut training program (think Legally Blonde Satisfies First man) Naturally, he is doing as well as one might expect.
Tom Hopper, Poppy Liu and Gabrielle Union also star Space Cadetwhich critics have described as “lazy streaming garbage” (ouch!). Still, it might be a good choice to put on in the background.

The Imaginary (Netflix)

Based on the acclaimed children's novel of the same name by A.F. Harrold, this new Netflix film centers on Rudger (Kokoro Terada), an imaginary boy who discovers that he will disappear if his creator, a young woman named Amanda (Rio Suzuki), forgets him.
Critics have described The imaginary as a “moving and charming testament to the pleasures of dreaming,” which is why it could be among the best Netflix movies of the year.
