It’s the new year! It’s time to set a bunch of New Year’s resolutions that involve overly ambitious movie lists! Luckily, we’re here to help you make progress on that goal because, honestly, what better way to start 2024 than by getting ready to watch a ton of the best horror movies on Netflix, Paramount Plus, and Peacock.
Whatever you’re in the mood for, there’s something on this list for you. This month’s selection caters to all tastes with a ’90s sci-fi classic, recent hits from James Wan and Jordan Peele, and a handful of new films from horror streamer Shudder that you can’t miss if you’re a fan of the gender.
Event Horizon (1997)
When: January 1st
Where to stream it: Paramount Plus (US, UK), rent or buy (AU)
Yeah Alien mastered the haunted house concept in space, then Event horizon He soaked that idea in blood and horror and dragged it through space and time. Paul WS Anderson’s late ’90s sci-fi horror is a magnificent exercise in over-the-top acting and stomach-churning profanity. Set in 2047, the film follows the crew of the rescue ship Lewis and Clark, tasked with investigating the lost starship Event Horizon when it mysteriously reappears.
While its plot resembles direct-to-video nonsense, this ensemble cast and commitment to bloodshed make it a cult classic. Sam Neill steals the show as Dr. Weir, chewing up all the scenery and delivering plenty of one-liners.
Evil (2021)
When: January 1st
Where to stream it: Netflix (US, UK), Foxtel Now (AU)
Taking a break from Aquaman Movies, James Wan dives back into horror for a wacky body horror that feels straight out of the 2000s. Akela Cooper’s script deserves praise for its ability to pull off a maelstrom of twists and wild scenes at the same time. Annabelle Wallis plays Madison Mitchell, a woman whose life begins to unravel with the appearance of visions chronicling the actions of a serial killer. Of course, nothing is as it seems, and before long Madison realizes that she may be related to the killer. If the twist hasn’t been spoiled for you yet, don’t read any further into this cheesy horror and savor the crazy revelations.
The Lodge (2020)
When: January 1st
Where to stream it: Max (US), Netflix (UK), Rent or Buy (AU)
Snowy landscape! Christmas time! A picturesque holiday town! Don’t be fooled by the wintry components of this 2020 thriller: this is not a warm and fuzzy horror film. The shelter is an uncomfortable and deeply disturbing watch that revolves around a family who ventures to a remote cabin for the holidays. When Richard (Richard Armitage) has to leave for a work commitment, he leaves his two children in the care of his stepmother Grace (Riley Keough) for the duration.
What follows is a twisted nightmare as a blizzard traps Grace and the children indoors, where it’s unclear who or what is happening. Don’t expect a happy ending but a journey into the abyss that concludes with a wild final act.
Destroy all the neighbors (2023)
When: 12th of January
Where to stream it: Shudder (UK, US, Australia)
Travel to 2024 with this wild, wacky horror comedy directed by Josh Forbes. Destroy all the neighbors evokes Peter Jackson’s early films (think gross, grim special effects) with a musical twist. William Brown (Jonah Ray Rodrigues) is a rocker whose mission in life is to create progressive work even though everyone in his life refuses to support his goals.
That includes his new neighbor from hell Vlad (an unrecognizable Alex Winters), whom he accidentally decapitates during a heated confrontation over noise. William is then taunted by Vlad’s corpse, who refuses to leave him alone while he attempts to create his masterpiece, which, honestly, is it fair?
The Passenger (2023)
When: January 15
Where to stream it: Shudder (UK, US, Australia)
Are we in the era of Kyle Gallner? The independent actor continues to dominate horror with standout performances in recent photos. Shout, Smile, Mother, can I? [I remember him in the phenomenal but under-watched Veronica Mars! – Ed] and now The passenger in which he takes on the role of a deranged fast food employee.
The critically acclaimed film follows Gallner’s character, Benson, who goes on a rampage in the workplace in an effort to support her co-worker Randy (Johnny Berchtold), but instead makes his life a living hell. . Horror lovers will recognize director Carter Smith, who directed Plant Horror in 2008 The ruins, Jamie Marks has died and 2022 swallowed. Expect this one to be part of the social media chatter when it comes out mid-month.
Not (2022)
When: January 18
Where to stream it: Peacock (US), Sky Cinema (UK), Netflix (AU)
Proof that lightning strikes three times for Jordan Peele. The comic book-turned-horror filmmaker delivers another winning entry to the genre canon with No. Despite its blatant horror tropes, it has a summer blockbuster aesthetic thanks to its location; sunny Agua Dulce in California.
Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer play brothers Em and OJ Haywood, who inherit their family’s horse training business after the mysterious death of their father. The couple discovers a mysterious object flying over their house that may be responsible. To say more would ruin one of the most surprising and genuinely creepy horror films of last year. Watch and be amazed at the lengths Peele goes to prove the villainy of his monster.
Proper Meat (2023)
When: 26 of January
Where to stream it: Shudder (UK, US, Australia)
