Flowers are in fashion for spring, but for Nicky Zimmermann they never go out of season. “We are not moving. Us are floral,” he said, laughing.
Known for its romantic designs and vibrant prints, the Australian brand has gained a following among celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez, Naomie Harris and Katie Holmes.
After two seasons in the ornate Petit Palais, the brand moved to a white box inside Tokyo’s Palais contemporary art museum, the better to showcase its airy dresses in complexion-flattering hues.
“It has been incredible to put it on and see how the dress changes depending on who we put it on. I mean, all the girls are beautiful, but some girls are just blue, and they wear blue and it’s amazing. And the same with the peach,” the designer said in a preview.
Inspired by 1920s botanical art, flora illustrations were translated into sheer prints and tone-on-tone laser-cut fabric flowers. Gradient silk dresses billowing in the wind were guaranteed to make her way into a pool party.
While Zimmermann is primarily known as a travel brand, in recent years the brand has diversified its offering to include categories such as knitwear and denim, as well as accessories such as bags, shoes, glasses and jewelry.
Highlights this season included ballerina-style fabrics and an excellent selection of shirt dresses and skirts made from soft nappa leather.
With the opening of a second boutique in Paris scheduled for November, the brand continues to expand at a rapid pace. In August, Advent International, one of the world’s largest private equity investors, reached a deal to acquire a majority stake in the company, with more openings planned in Scottsdale, Arizona; Orlando, Florida; and the Caribbean island of St. Barths.
“They are totally in agreement with what we want to do. That’s what they want us to do, so we’ll do it together,” Zimmermann said of his new sponsors. It seems that everything is going rosy.
