Woolmark, the reference label for Wool, has announced its association with the DyE Dry Colorizd specialist to implement Quantumcolor. This process uses only 0.5 liters of water per kilogram of thread and eliminates the need for bleaching, pretreatment and discharge of wastewater.

This new process can produce colors ranging from the faded to saturated. The most important thing is that it eliminates the use of chemicals such as caustic sodas, acids, salts and bleach, substances that generally require 60 to 120 liters of water per kilo of thread to rinse.

Woolmark has successfully tested the device with 100% merino wool, as well as wool mixed with cotton, cellulose fibers (wood pulp derived) and synthetic fibers such as Nylon. The tests confirmed the viability of the process throughout the production chain, including finished products.

“After extensive tests of Merino wool and wool mixes, we realized that Colorizd's team was developing something truly revolutionary for the wool industry,” said Julie Davies, Woolmark's managing director.

According to textile exchange data, in 2023, wool represented 0.9% of the global fiber production. The organization estimated that 89% of this was conventional wool, while 4% had certified sustainable wool and 6% recycled wool.

The dyeing stage is strategic and complex on the way to environmental responsibility in fashion. A 2018 study conducted by Quantis estimated that the dye and the finishing stage represent 36% of the pollution caused by clothing. It is also estimated that 20% of the global water pollution is linked to these production stages.
