Vivienne Westwood's personal wardrobe is up for auction in London, including ballgowns, tweed suits and more.
The live sale will take place on June 25 and there will also be an online auction for two weeks from June 14, plus a free exhibition open to the public at Christie's on King Street from June 14 to 24.
The more than 200 lots auctioned by Christie's include pieces from historical collections and jewelry and accessories, as well as clothing.
“Christie’s said the sale is unprecedented… a once-in-a-lifetime occurrence.”
The items sold were selected by her husband and design partner Andreas Kronthaler, who had discussed the idea of the auction with her weeks before his death in 2022.
The first pieces for sale come from her Witches AW83 collection, which was partly inspired by the drawings of Keith Haring.
There are also overtly political pieces from her SS05 Propaganda collection, as well as less thematic pieces, all together in complete looks rather than standalone pieces.
Some garments still have very personal reminders that they were Westwood's own clothes with elements such as badges left in place.
It is also interesting that Westwood was an early supporter of the repair movement and the items also show signs of repair as several of them have been repaired multiple times.
Proceeds from the sale will go to the Vivienne Foundation, Amnesty International and Doctors Without Borders.
