Tommy Hilfiger opens NYFW and turns up the volume

Tommy Hilfiger returned to New York Fashion Week on Friday night, after a two-year break, and turned up the volume with a preppy-chic collection inside Grand Central Station.

With Sylvester Stallone cheering on his young daughter Scarlet, who paraded right in front of plus-size beauty Paloma Elsesser, the show received huge applause. The noise multiplied throughout the environment (inside the famous Oyster Bar of the largest train station in the United States) when Hilfiger staged the first major brand show of the six-day runway season in New York.

“What can I tell you? “I am a very proud father,” Stallone smiled, showing FashionNetwork.com several photos of his daughter on his mobile phone. Scarlet, 21, then appeared in an oversized pea coat, pleated mini skirt, beanie and python-print wellies.

Born across town in the Celtic neighborhood of Hell's Kitchen, and famous for playing Italian stud Rocky Balboa, we had always assumed Stallone was a mix of Italian and Irish. But when we asked the legendary actor about his genes, he replied, “basically, Russian and French.” Therefore, there.

Referencing the collegiate cool and insouciance of Joe College, this was a great Fall/Winter 2024 collection, and worn with a hipster cast, it was one of Tommy's most concise and compelling shows.

After taking his collections abroad over the last decade (with stops in Shanghai, Milan, London and Paris), it seemed only right to see Tommy back in New York. His most recent show in New York was in September 2022, with a striking collection, albeit in a show washed and staged in pouring rain on the banks of the Queens River. Before that, his last major collection in New York was a memorable exhibition at Harlem's Apollo Theater in September 2019.

The big novelty at Hilfiger this season was the volume, wide coat cuts on the shoulders and lengths down to the ankles; the sweaters were thick; The shirt collars were huge and the scarves were two-meter-long cable knits.

The collection revealed many smart ideas from recent fashion seasons, although always on Tommy's terms. Above all, it's a fun show, with the cast parading around the Oyster Bar, to a great West Love soundtrack. This man is such a brilliant DJ that he managed to perfectly combine Grover Washington Jr. with Parliament-Funkadelic.

“What I wanted was a wardrobe that many young women could easily understand and enjoy wearing,” explained Tommy, who took his bow in a midnight blue and ecru leather and wool baseball jacket with the baseball logo.

He followed seconds later with a performance by Jon Batiste, marching down the catwalk with microphone in hand, before almost sitting on top of Anna Wintour.

And starting the season in New York with a success for Hilfiger.
