Tolu Coker brought a homely flavor to the Newgen space in the former Selfridges Hotel, where a mother-like figure dressed in Nigerian clothing swept the floor while speaking to the audience as if they were her children.
For most of those present, this was an act, but for the young British-Nigerian designer, this was simply life at home.
“I sing to God; the screams and shouts to come and prepare, it is simply a beautiful testimony to all the struggles of so many people who have migrated and overcome [the challenges of life]”Coker said backstage.
Blood-colored leather jackets; double-breasted gray coat dresses; Pleated mini dresses with a colorful striped tie and indigo denim dresses with matching jackets were a nod to the best of Sunday, an occasion taken seriously in African homes to get ready for church.
This was Coker's church: all the models were dressed in leggy displays, strutting and dancing to “Different Pattern” by Seyi Vibez, the Nigerian singer-songwriter.
