Stella McCartney urges brands to stop using feathers

Sustainability advocate Stella McCartney has feathers on her banned list and is asking her fellow international designers to sign PETA's Feather-Free Pledge to not use them in their collections.

This follows the publication of the animal rights group's report which reveals that birds exploited by the feather industry “suffer miserable lives and violent deaths”.

In a series of newly released social media videos, McCartney “opens up[s] eyes and hearts among the millions of followers of the brand around the world to show the suffering that birds endure for their feathers.”

The designer hopes the launches will “lead the way to true creativity in fashion by recreating the look, lightness, movement and insulation of down with vegan materials.”

She said: “Every year, the fashion industry plucks and kills millions of birds for their feathers, which is not only inhumane but unnecessary. My Fall 2024 collection showcases the desirability and possibilities of cruelty-free alternatives that are respectful of animals and Mother Earth. I hope it inspires you to join PETA and me in pledging to end the use of feathers in fashion and beyond.”

Their collection features BioPuff, a material made from reeds “whose use contributes to the regeneration of wetlands in Cambridgeshire and helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase biodiversity.”

PETA notes that in addition to McCartney, top designers including Felder Felder, Eirinn Hayhow, Richard Malone, Patrick McDowell, VIN + OMI, Pīferi, Sarah Regensburger and Joshua James Small have already signed the pledge, “while many others are opting for luxurious faux feathers made from bamboo, recycled materials and metals.”
