Prabal Gurung & Boll & Branch debut sustainable dress at the Met Gala 2024

Esteemed fashion designer Prabal Gurung turned to Boll & Branch, the leading luxury bedding brand, for a first-of-its-kind red carpet look for The Costume Institute's 2024 Met Gala. Worn by former world tennis number one Maria Sharapova, the dress combines Boll & Branch fabrics with Prabal Gurung's astute sartorial sensibility.

Made exclusively from Boll & Branch organic cotton fabric, the daffodil yellow off-the-shoulder dress is inspired by the brightness and softness of garden flowers. The silhouette features a plunging neckline and hand-cut organic cotton bias bands in various sizes, all hand-sewn onto a base to create a unique weave with the fabric. An off-the-shoulder taffeta opera cape with rosette and train detail completes the look. Approximately 20 yards of Boll & Branch fabric and over 300 hours were used to make the dress.

“When I heard about the Sleeping Beauties theme, I thought, 'Wouldn't it be iconic to do something metaphorical by partnering with someone in that world who really understands the materials?'” he says. Gurung. “Normally for Met Gala moments we use duchess silks and satins. Boll & Branch has the finest, most luxurious cotton you have ever seen and touched. “I grew up in India, so finding a cotton fabric made in an exceptionally luxurious way seemed like the most elegant expression of this theme and a beautiful way to link our values.”

Prabal Gurung teamed up with Boll & Branch to create a unique Met Gala dress worn by Maria Sharapova. The dress, in daffodil yellow, features a plunging neckline and an opera cape. Made with organic cotton from Boll & Branch, it took 20 yards of fabric and over 300 hours to complete. Both brands prioritize sustainability and South Asian roots in their design philosophy.

Beyond the design partnership, Prabal Gurung and Boll & Branch share strong guiding principles focused on sustainability, traceability, philanthropy and impact. The two brands have common roots in South Asia; Prabal remains deeply connected to his Nepalese heritage, a source of inspiration for him from both a business and creative perspective. Boll & Branch sources most of its 100% organic cotton from family farms in India and partners with the best weavers in the world, helping everyone with fair wages and safe working conditions.

“Prabal and I approach design with relentless consideration to create pieces that are not only beautiful, but also moving,” says Missy Tannen, Founder and Chief Product Officer, Boll & Branch. “The magic of our partnership comes from a shared passion for traditional craftsmanship and processes. “Together, we extracted the most exceptional characteristics from the world’s best natural material and made a statement worthy of fashion’s biggest night.”
