M&S plans to expand with a new flagship store in Bristol

M&S has announced plans to return to Bristol with the opening of a new flagship store in Cabot Circus at its annual general meeting.

The 80,000 sq ft store is backed by a £21m (about $24m) investment by the retailer and will offer customers the best of M&S food, clothing and beauty. The opening is expected to create around 150 new jobs and is part of the retailer’s store rotation strategy to ensure it has the right stores in the right place with the right space.

M&S has announced the opening of a new flagship store in Cabot Circus, Bristol. The 80,000 sq ft store will offer a wide range of M&S products, in line with the retailer’s strategy to optimise store locations. This expansion is part of M&S’ wider plan to open up to four new full-line stores and nine food outlets across the UK this financial year.

Cabot Circus complements M&S’s existing offering in Bristol, including its stores in Avonmeads, Eastgate, Imperial Park and Whiteladies Road, as well as Cribbs Causeway and Longwell Green.

Work is currently underway to transform the Cribbs Causeway store.

In its recent annual results, the retailer announced plans to open up to four new full-line stores and nine new food halls across the UK during the current financial year.

Stuart Machin, M&S chief executive, “It’s fantastic to announce our return to Bristol city centre today. At Cabot Circus, we can create a flagship store that offers the best possible shopping experience for customers and showcases the very best of M&S. Our store rotation programme is all about ensuring we have the right stores in the right place and with the right space to excite and inspire our customers, even in city centres. This £21m investment will enable us to do just that, whilst also expanding our presence in the South West.”

M&S currently has more than 45 stores in the South West, employs more than 4,000 colleagues and works with more than 1,100 selected farmers in the region. This latest investment builds on the approximately £6m invested in its South West stores over the past three years.

Rita-Rose Gagné, CEO of Hammerson, “We are delighted to continue to expand our partnership with M&S at Cabot Circus, having seen the positive impact of their presence in our other destinations. M&S is a brand that resonates across our core catchment areas and this new store will support our strategy of creating a leading destination, thriving in the heart of Bristol city centre.”
