More than 80 deputies, led by Sandrine Le Feur (EPR), president of the Sustainable Development Committee of the National Assembly, call for a “ban on Shein in France” to “protect workers, public health and the planet”, in an article published in La Tribune Dimanche.
With the opening of the Asian brand in the BHV department store in Paris at the beginning of November, “it is not fashion that is democratized, it is Shein that is legitimized”, say 83 deputies, including numerous members of the Ensemble pour la République, together with, among others, Marie-Noëlle Battistel (PS), Anne-Cécile Violland (Horizons), Josiane Corneloup (LR) and Erwan Balanant (MoDem).
“The most brutal face of fast fashion (…) is given a veneer of respectability,” but this cannot “mask what is behind the facade, which destroys the planet, our jobs and the health of consumers,” the signatories stated.
“One measure is essential: ban Shein in France,” they say, accusing the ultra-fast fashion giant of “unfair competition” and flooding the market with “toxic products.”
“As the debate can no longer be limited to indignation, the Sustainable Development Committee of the National Assembly has summoned Shein executives to finally hear from them about their practices,” the parliamentarians stated. “A hearing they had tried to avoid,” they added.
Initially scheduled for November 26, the hearing was postponed to December 2, with the e-commerce platform saying it could not meet the original date due to a court hearing on the same day.
In the Government's sights, the platform was summoned on Wednesday morning before the Paris Judicial Court, which must rule on the suspension of the site in France after the discovery of the sale of child-like sex dolls and category A weapons.
Shein had already refused a hearing on November 18 before the fact-finding mission on controls of imported products in France, citing this court date.
Furthermore, this week parliamentarians from across the political spectrum – except the LFI, RN and UDR groups – presented a proposed European resolution in the National Assembly, calling for tougher measures against certain platforms. He will be examined on Wednesday.
Shein has already received three fines in France this year, totaling 191 million euros, in particular for false promotions and misleading information.
