Marimekko's Unikko print celebrates 60 years in Helsinki and Tokyo

The annual Marimekko Day is celebrated in mid-May with an open-air public fashion show in Helsinki and in Marimekko stores around the world. To celebrate 60 years of the iconic Unikko print, the show will also be seen in Tokyo for the first time.

Esplanade Park in the heart of Helsinki will bloom during Marimekko Day on May 17, when Marimekko invites its community to enjoy colorful and inspiring summer fashion featuring the 60-year-old Unikko print. In addition to Marimekko's Spring/Summer 2024 collection, the open-to-all fashion show features live music by Arppa and the band to accompany the models. The event is organized by Marimekko President and CEO Tiina Alahuhta-Kasko and journalist Maria Veitola.

Celebrated globally, Marimekko Day brings Tokyo its iconic outdoor fashion show. The event, in honor of the 60th anniversary of the Unikko print, fuses femininity with utilitarianism in its Spring/Summer 2024 collection. Esplanade Park in Helsinki will host shows on May 17, while the debut in Tokyo will be on May 18, marking Marimekko's focus on Asian growth.

In honor of the 60th anniversary of Marimekko's most beloved print, Unikko, the Marimekko Day fashion show will also extend to Tokyo for the first time on May 18. During the strategic period 2023-2027, Marimekko is focused on expanding its growth with Asia as the most important geographic area for international growth.

Marimekko's Spring/Summer 2024 collection brings joy to summer days.

The collection seen during Marimekko Day fuses feminine minimalism with modern, utilitarian workwear, both equally representative of the brand's rich design heritage. The Unikko print is also celebrated in the collection in more ways than one, including different scales, placements, color combinations and techniques.

“The Spring/Summer 2024 collection reflects Marimekko's mission to bring joy to people's everyday lives through bold prints and colors, which also creates the perfect summer wardrobe. The collection includes colorful and relaxed poplin dresses, skirts, shirts, coats, pants and shorts to easily layer with other layers, making it easy to create different looks,” he adds. The Marimekko Day parades will take place in Helsinki's Esplanade Park on Friday, May 17, 2024 at 12, 1:30 p.m., 4 and 6 p.m.

The Tokyo Summer Fashion Show, open to the press, influencers and public, will take place on Saturday, May 18, 2024.
