While Skims was launched with the goal of shedding a pound or two, when it comes to a flagship store, founder Kim Kardashian doesn't skimp on anything. For her first store in New York, the cultural phenom and businesswoman created a unique neutral-toned playground to house her brand's ever-growing category expression.
Present were partner, co-founder and CEO Jens Grede, the Los Angeles-based Swedish entrepreneur behind the cool denim line Frame, and Brady, the athleisure line of the popular soccer player who was once married to Gisele Bündchen.
Typical of anyone with the last name Kardashian, the event caused quite a stir in the popular Fifth Avenue shopping area in Midtown.
Located in the former Versace store, the store is close to other popular price brands such as Nike, Zara, Uniqlo, Victoria's Secret, as well as luxury stalwarts Ferragamo and Cartier, the next-door neighbor that had added additional barricades to cope. with the chaos caused by onlookers, both intentional and accidental, hoping to catch a glimpse of Kardashian and her famous friends like Ciara, FKA Twigs and more, who came to congratulate her on the inauguration.
As guests entered the three-level shaping emporium, they were greeted by a bevy of models of all shapes, sizes and colors sporting the staples and wearing platinum blonde curly wigs. It was a nod to Skims creative collaborator Vanessa Beecroft, who has been working with the brand since its inception, 1996's seminal work, VB16 Piano Americano-Beige.
Given the cold temperatures of New York and the location in front of the doors, hopefully these models received a head start. The models flanked a giant headless statue inspired by Beecroft's Venus de Milo that enthused netizens due to its realistic sculpture of pubic hair.
Almost all traces of the former Versace “mansion” that once housed the building had disappeared (except for a glimpse of the ornate black staircase still visible above the stairwell when guests reached the upper level) and had been covered. Instead, the space was transformed into the specific shade of brown cream favored by the global influencer, and its marshmallow texture came courtesy of renowned design studio Rafael de Cárdenas.
Instead of a vast, empty 6,570-square-foot space, the designer created several cocoons on each floor, so the neutrality wouldn't seem sterile. As many, including FashionNetwork.com, have noted, Pantone Color of the Year Mocha Mousse is also a color in Kardashian's wheelhouse, and she can be credited with its popularity. There is a warmth to that tone that appears in all of their products, adding a warm atmosphere to the store.
The first level houses top shapewear and underwear, including its popular Fits Everybody, Cotton and Ultimate Bras collections. The inclusivity of the brand is demonstrated by the most varied body shapes ever seen by any humanoid molded to display clothing and it is thanks to Bernstein Display. (Hans Boodt has also made mannequin forms for Skims in the past.) There is also a custom photo booth on the main floor to capture the old-fashioned visit.
As guests ascended to the second floor, DJs played in the seasonal merch room, which displayed the only non-neutral merchandise available; in this case, red Christmas pajamas and some ruffled pink and white negligee-inspired pieces. Here, FashionNetwork.com spoke to several employees of the brand, all dressed in black. A general manager said the store will employ 185 people in total. The women wore a turtleneck-style dress, $94 on the brand's website for the occasion, but confirmed that the store's attire would typically be the brand's wool offering in the winter and biker shorts in the summer. Most had straight hair slicked back in a bun and neutral makeup on their faces. Even the catering staff sported the look of what could be called 'Kimbots'.
Catering by New York caterer Olivier Cheng also matched the neutral theme with a buffet in the second-floor dressing room, filled with dreamy soft lighting, in multiple shades of beige, save for a few seaweed-covered cashews.
The third floor housed the men's collection and current collaborations from Skims, Dolce & Gabbana and the newly launched collaboration from The North Face. It also housed Ms. Kardashian, who was gathering content and greeting special guests along with Grede. She emerged to join the gen-pop party wearing a cream-colored Chrome Hearts leather bustier, matching pants and Uggs boots to accommodate her knee scooter, the accessory of the day due to a broken foot. Grede—available to greet friends from both coasts, like designer Peter Dundas—posed for more photos with his business partner.
Although the duo is serious and the brand is currently valued at $4 billion, the evening was all about having a good time. Like good hosts, the farewell guests received a unique cream-colored hoodie that said New York. This way, guests could take home that cozy feeling after braving the cold December night.
