The mosaics of artist Faith Ringgold (1930-2024), recreated by Chanakya artisans, catch the eye. The colorful backdrop of the female athletes aligns perfectly with the monochrome silhouettes on the runway. The freedom of the female body, a favorite theme of Dior's creative director for women's collections, once again takes pride of place. She introduced the jersey to the world of haute couture as a metallic mesh in gold, silver and white, which hugs the shape of the body. Ultra-light interior bustiers structure the outfits. Sports jerseys are appropriated and embellished with gold leaf or micro sequins, LVMH said in a press release.
For the A/W 2024-25 Dior Couture show, Maria Grazia Chiuri created a haute couture collection that exalts the body. Drawing inspiration from ancient times to modern sports, the designs resonate with a vision of gender equality in competition. Artist Faith Ringgold's mosaics, recreated by Chanakya artisans, provided a colorful backdrop symbolizing female athletes.
Pleats and draping are present in many of the pieces, as skirts reveal a pair of trousers at every step, their fringes amplifying movement. Fabrics seem sculpted to the body, evoking statues in silk dresses magnified by embroidery. The ancient peplum becomes contemporary in the collection. Walking in gladiator sandals, neo-Amazons wear dresses that hang off one shoulder, revealing sheer metallic tank tops trimmed in satin. Embroidered mini mirrors echo moiré-effect mosaics and gold fabrics evoke precious molten liquids. A standout red dress, the “colour of life” according to Christian Dior, culminated this celebration of the body.
