The Hollywood star, Halle Berry, had to change his outfit for the opening night of the Cannes Film Festival after the event presented a new red carpet clothing code that prohibits long trains and naked. Meanwhile, several attendees seemed to ignore the rules completely.
The new regulations forced Berry to leave their original dress in their wardrobe. “He had an incredible dress to wear this Gupta night, and I can't wear it because the train is too big,” Oscar winner told journalists, referring to Indian designer Gaurav Gupta. Gupta, known for the dramatic dresses used by stars like Cardi B at the Met gala, had designed Berry's original appearance.
“Of course, I will follow the rules,” added Berry, who serves in the jury of Cannes this year for Palma d'Or.
Other stars, however, did not seem to meet. The German model Heidi Klum wore a daring pink dress with a train that extended at least three meters (10 feet), while the Chinese actor and influencer Wan Qianhui reached a huge cloud of white taffeta.
Berry, who won his academy award for Monster's Ball, also supported the new nude restrictions. “The part of nudity is probably also a good rule,” he said.
This year marks the first time that Cannes has officially published its clothing code of the red carpet. “It is not about regulating what people use but to prohibit total nudity on the red carpet, in line with the French law,” said a spokesman for the AFP festival.
Cannes' red carpet has been known for a long time for its daring fashion moments. In 2021, Model Bella Hadid reached the headlines with a sculptural dress from Schiaparelli that came out with the skin that went viral on social networks.
Stilettos get the heel
In addition to describing the guidelines for revealing clothes, Cannes clarified its rules about footwear after years of controversy. The festival faced criticism for statements that women had to use high heels.
Several celebrities, including Julia Roberts, Cate Blanchett and Isabelle Huppert, have reached the headlines to challenge the unwritten rule of the heel, opt for the floors or go barefoot. Kristen Stewart made a memorable statement in 2018 when he walked to the red carpet with needle heels and then removed them in front of the photographers.
The clothing code now explicitly allows “elegant shoes or sandals with or without heels”, a change that the president of the jury Juliette Binoche praised as “a very good idea.” The winner of the French Oscar joked that he was talking about “experience.”
