Burberry launches 'Made in the UK' series

Burberry has launched ‘Made in the UK’, a new series championing Burberry’s commitment to supporting British manufacturing. ‘Made in the UK’, a celebration of British craftsmanship, begins with a focus on Burberry’s iconic Heritage trench coats and overcoats, made in Castleford, West Yorkshire.

The Heritage collection includes four signature styles: the Chelsea, Kensington and Waterloo trench coats, as well as the Camden coat. Each element of the designs, made in Castleford, where Burberry has had a dedicated manufacturing facility for over 50 years, requires the skill and experience of specialist craftsmen. Each specialist takes up to a year to perfect the intricate stitching of the collar, with over 180 stitches creating a fluid curve that allows the collar to fit perfectly to the neck.

Luxury fashion house Burberry has launched ‘Made in the UK’, a series highlighting its commitment to British manufacturing, starting with the Heritage Trench Coat and Car Coats made in Castleford. The collection uses Burberry’s iconic gabardine fabric, woven from 100% organic cotton, and features eco-friendly elements such as bio-sourced resin buttons.

The cotton gabardine used to make Heritage trench coats and coats is woven at Burberry’s Keighley factory, as is the iconic Burberry Check cotton that has lined the coats since the 1920s. A revolutionary fabric, gabardine was invented by Thomas Burberry in 1879 – its rain-resistant, lightweight and breathable properties were developed to offer greater freedom when exploring the outdoors in harsh weather conditions, Burberry said in a press release.

The collection is part of the 'Trench for Tomorrow' initiative, which ensures Heritage trench coats and trench coats are made from lower-impact materials and can be worn for as long as possible with the help of ReBurberry Services.

The coats, which have been made in England for over a century, are made from Burberry’s signature gabardine fabric, which is now woven from 100% organic cotton. Organic cotton is a less chemical and water-intensive alternative to conventionally produced cotton. The buttons on these styles are also made from 90% bio-based resin, which is a renewable natural resource derived from plants. Additionally, the manufacturing plants in Castleford and Keighley are powered by 100% renewable electricity.

To help ensure trench coats and coats are enjoyed for many years to come, Burberry offers a range of circular services including trench coat refurbishment, waterproofing, repair, rental and resale, the statement added.

“Yorkshire is the home and heart of our UK manufacturing. It is not only where skilled craftsmen create some of our most iconic products, but also where generations of families continue to pass down vital artisanal skills. It is very important to us to ensure we preserve those skills and champion British craftsmanship. We help do this by recruiting locally and offering technical skills development through our on-site training school in Castleford,” he said. Lise Edwards-Warrener, Vice President, Ready-to-Wear Planning and Operations.

“We're proud of our British manufacturing heritage, while at the same time challenging ourselves to adapt and do our part to protect the planet. Our 'Trench for Tomorrow' initiative embodies this spirit of responsible craftsmanship and innovation by ensuring our iconic trench coat uses certified and responsibly sourced materials and can be enjoyed for years to come through our ReBurberry services,” he said. Caroline Laurie, Corporate Vice President responsibility.
