The British Fashion Council (BFC) and Copenhagen Fashion Week (CPHFW) jointly announced on Monday a new collaboration to align their efforts to “accelerate the industry's sustainability actions in the Nordic and British fashion markets.”
It means that the BFC will now implement the strict Sustainability Requirements framework developed by CPHFW and implemented from 2020 in its updated form.
The program begins with the BFC Newgen initiative this year. This is a key step as Newgen is a leading global design program and supports the top design talents of tomorrow.
The Minimum Standards will be “integrated into the existing mandatory admission criteria” to Newgen. Full implementation will come into effect in January next year after an onboarding and testing period.
Outgoing BFC chief executive Caroline Rush said the move “builds on our existing Minimum Standards and reaffirms our commitment to driving positive change across the global fashion industry. “This partnership is an important step in ensuring that sustainability becomes an integral part of the future of fashion.”
And CPHFW director Cecilie Thorsmark added: “This partnership not only encourages much-needed industry alignment, but also underlines the unique potential of fashion weeks and councils to drive positive change within the industry.” . “With the British Fashion Council, as an influential player on the global fashion landscape, we see great potential to further amplify the impact of our collective commitment to sustainability.”
CPHFW has been very influential in Europe as one of the first to adopt sustainability rules for fashion weeks. Since launching its framework, the Norwegian Fashion Centre, Oslo Catwalk and Berlin Fashion Week run by the German Fashion Council have also embarked on its implementation.
