Berlin Fashion Week adopts Copenhagen sustainability requirements


Copenhagen Fashion Week (CPHFW) has long been a pioneer on the sustainability front and is now also weighing in with the news that Berlin Fashion Week (BFW) is adopting its sustainability requirements.

The new partnership to implement the requirements developed by CPHFW will see BFW commit to making the Minimum Standards a mandatory criterion for entertainment brands at the event.

They said the deal aligns their efforts to accelerate the industry's sustainability actions in the Nordic and German fashion markets.

Funded by the Department of Economic Affairs, Energy and Public Enterprises of the Berlin Senate and executed by the German Fashion Council in cooperation with Studio MM04, “this decision means another step for BFW towards a responsible fashion platform.”

In addition to existing guidelines on sustainability requirements, we're told that Berlin will “implement specific adaptations aligned with BFW's strategy” and more information will be shared at a later date.

With the financial support of 180,000 euros until 2025, we are once again investing in the future of Berlin as a pioneer in sustainability. Through sustainable practices such as upcycling and the use of recycled materials, social and ecological responsibility go hand in hand with Made in Berlin and Germany fashion. With these standards, Berlin will be an example compared to other global fashion metropolises.”

CPHFW has had its mandatory admission criteria for three seasons and its CEO, Cecilie Thorsmark, said the new development not only “brings much-needed alignment, but also emphasizes fashion week opportunities and tips to be part of the industry's transition for the better. . “It is a great milestone for us to see the Sustainability Requirements gain global recognition and we hope it inspires more actors to collaborate.”

The standards will come into full effect for the approximately 35 labels that will be displayed at BFW in February 2026.
