In the current social climate, Stacey Bendet's style of female empowerment at Alice + Olivia is more relevant than ever. Her fashion week appearances seem to attract exponentially more guests each season, which can be summed up by an overall feeling of openness and inclusivity.
“We care a lot about female empowerment and positivity,” Bendet said during the presentation, adding, “That's what our brand has been about for 20 years. I like it when everyone comes into my house, my office, my stores to feel really welcome, really warm and really hugged, and leave feeling even better about themselves. Our shows are a manifestation of that. And they are creative and fun for Instagram.”
Really fun. Spring was marked by bold colors in fun and unexpected combinations. Each look in the presentation managed to incorporate four colors, from the eyeshadow to the shoes. Voluminous skirts featured colorful stripes, while other energetic looks relied on solid garment construction. The freshest version came in the form of an orange sleeveless top and lavender pants paired with a reversible yellow and mint blue coat.
He constructed multiple vignettes from a theme conceptually derived from a “field of dreams.” There were clouds of models dressed in hot pink sportswear and baby pink loungewear; a lavender field full of floral dresses and a park with knitwear juxtaposed with slinky dresses, among other rooms. “Look at the fabric, look at the details. You really have to look at the clothes up close,” she added. The texture of a pretty moiré blouse could be seen with the naked eye, as could the shine of a hot pink top with puffed sleeves. Among the vignettes was a Volkswagen Beetle wrapped in the season's hero print, allowing guests to participate in the model ensemble experience.
More than just an advocate for women, Bendet takes on the role of fashion mentor. Starting this season, through a collaboration with Murder Bravado, Bendet will give younger designers a platform to showcase their work, whether at their presentations or through in-store events. “I have 44 stores around the world and the ability to help them. I will manufacture it, I will produce it. You play, you design, you create.” Fashion fairy godmother for everyone? She could be.
