Wrexham star Paul Mullin to miss League One opener after surgery

Wrexham star striker Paul Mullin will miss the start of the new season after undergoing “minor spinal surgery”.

Mullin will also miss Wrexham's summer tour of the United States and Canada, which sees the Welsh club, owned by Hollywood actors Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, play Bournemouth, Chelsea and Vancouver Whitecaps.

Wrexham said on Wednesday that Mullin, 29, underwent surgery in London in mid-June to correct a chronic lower back and hamstring problem.

He has scored more than 100 goals in three seasons at Wrexham, who secured promotion to League One (England's third tier) in April. It is the second consecutive promotion for the team since they were thrust into the spotlight following investment from their Hollywood owners. They are two divisions below the Premier League.

“The club's three-time top scorer and back-to-back player of the season has overcome the injury through conservative treatment after three years of concern,” Wrexham said in a statement. “However, during off-season training it became apparent that this approach could not be continued and, following further consultations, it was determined that surgery would be the best option.”

The club said the surgery was “to ensure he is fit for the majority of the 2024-25 campaign.”

Wrexham will kick off their league campaign on August 10 when they host Wycombe Wanderers.

Wrexham is the subject of the globally broadcast documentary series Welcome to Wrexham.
