New York freedom was 9-0 and seemed to fly like the WNBA defenders champions. But on June 10, the problems were bubbling.
The striker Leonie Febich had just played his last game of Liberty for a couple of weeks while heading to the Eurobasket tournament with Germany. Five days before, the Jonquel Jones center had suffered an ankle injury that would later be further aggravated, costing its nine games so far this season.
Now, almost a month later, freedom has 12-6 and has struggled to play consistently, for obvious reasons. With Jones, the MVP of the WNBA finals of 2024, febich and febich just returns to the rhythm of things with New York, this team is not the same as the hot season began.
As Freedom prepares to organize Las Vegas Aces, a team that has been above and below this season that New York, on Tuesday (8 pm et, ESPN), Jones is again and the striker Isabelle Harrison (knee) is questionable. After the defeat at home 79-70 on Sunday before the storm of Seattle, the coach of New York, Sandy Bondello, said that freedom is fighting without the internal presence of Jones to combat opponents who change so effectively against them.
“We have turned on a lot this year,” Bondello said. “As long as we have a good space and then trust, [we’re OK]. I think our trust disappeared. “
But New York is keeping things in perspective. Counting Tuesday, Liberty has three games left before the stars game, for which the front Breanna Stewart and the Sabrina ioncu guard were voted as headlines. Freedom is not even half of its schedule and I hope Jones can return after the rest of the stars.
“I think the team's morale is great,” said Ionescu. “I would not say that a victory or defeat has really divided the costumes or has even really put any kind of blows on the way between us. We understand the pieces we have lost. We understand the games we have lost and how we have lost them.
“It's not about pointing out fingers, people [being] OR OR IN THE ALIGNMENTS THAT WE HAVE NOT SEEN, DEFENSES THAT WE HAVE NOT SEEN. It's about understanding that we have to find a way to get a victory. “
