Plymouth Argyle head coach Wayne Rooney was sent off during his team's championship match against Blackburn Rovers.
The former Manchester United and England striker was sacked eight times during his illustrious playing career and has now been sacked as a manager too.
Rooney, who took charge of the club for the 2024-25 season, was sent off after kicking a bottle into the crowd as his frustration boiled over following Blackburn's equalizing goal.
However, their players handled the setback well and responded to the aftermath by scoring the winning goal in the 97th minute through Morgan Whittaker.
Rooney was not allowed to speak to the media after the match due to his sending off, but his assistant Pete Shuttleworth intervened.
“He's still passionate, we all watched him play for many years and we all know that passion is what drives him and he's been brilliant here,” Shuttleworth said.
“I've seen him like that, he still has that passion on the touchline. He likes to be calm and calculating at times and watch the game, and that's his management style. You're never going to accept that. [passion] out of Wayne.
“We were disappointed that Ryan Hardie wasn't fouled, and Wayne reacted with passion. I don't know what exactly the ejection was for or what they'll credit it with, but he just reacted that way.”
Argyle have won three home games in a row, putting them in 14th place in the championship standings.
