Virginia extends leadership in the NCAA female swimming championships


Federal Way, Washington.-Guetchen Walsh and Alex Walsh each won an individual title, and the sisters helped Virginia dominate the combined 400-yards relay on Friday night in the NCAA female swimming and diving championships.

Gretchen Walsh collected his second individual title of the championship in a US record, NCAA and the US Open of 46.97, beating the Olympic champion Torri Huske for almost two seconds in the butterfly 100. She is the first woman to break 47 seconds in the event.

Alex Walsh won a fifth different individual event in his career after securing the 100 breasts. Only another swimmer, Tracy Caulkins, has achieved that feat. It was the ninth individual national championship of Alex Walsh.

Claire Curzan de Virginia beat Bella Sims from Florida for a tenth of a second to win the 100 back in a time of 49.11.

The Cavaliers lead the team classification table with 383 points. Stanford is second in 292 and Texas third with 288.

Stanford dominated the 400 IM, ensuring first and third place. The second year student Caroline Bricker blew for Emma Weyant de Florida in a time of 3: 57.36 for her first national individual title and Lucy Bell had a better 4: 00.24 race ending.

Anna Peploowski, Senior from Indiana, won the 200 freestyle in 1: 40.50, with the companions of the ten swimmers Minna Abraham (USC) and Stephanie Balducini (Michigan) who finished second and third. Peploowski was the runner -up at the event last year.

The first -year student of Texas, Alejandra Estudillo Torres, won three meters diving.

The four -day meeting at the Country Center of Weyerhaeuser King County concludes on Saturday.
