The United States won its 40th gold medal in the final event of the Paris Olympics on Sunday: the women's basketball final.
The U.S. women's basketball team defeated France 67-66 after overcoming a 10-point deficit in the third quarter. It was the Americans' eighth consecutive gold medal in the event and the one they needed to secure a tie for the most gold medals at the Summer Olympics.

China also had 40 gold medals at the Olympics. China reached the 40th spot thanks to Li Wenwen, who won gold in the women's 81-kilogram weightlifting. The United States came within one of China when Jennifer Valente won gold in the women's omnium.
The United States was in constant motion throughout the Games. Jack Alexy, Chris Guiliano, Hunter Armstrong and Caeleb Dressel helped the U.S. to its first team gold last week. The wins piled up over the past two weeks as the Red, White and Blue picked up victories in a number of events, including women's soccer, men's golf and more.

Japan finished with 20 gold medals, while host country France took 16.
The United States finished with 126 medals in total, followed by China with 91. Great Britain came in third with 65, including 14 gold medals.

Both the United States and China earned more gold medals than they did during the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. The United States had 39 gold medals and China took home 38. Japan finished with 27.
