UEFA investigates Morata and Rodri for chanting against Gibraltar

UEFA has launched disciplinary proceedings against Spain captain Alvaro Morata and player of the tournament Rodri for singing about a claim to sovereignty over Gibraltar during the European Championship title celebrations.

UEFA said a disciplinary inspector “is being appointed to assess a possible breach” of its rules by the two players.

Morata and Rodri led thousands of fans in chanting “Gibraltar is Spanish” in a celebration in Madrid on Monday after the team's 2-1 victory over England in the Euro 2024 final.

Gibraltar, at the southern tip of Spain, has been a British Overseas Territory for more than 300 years.

The Gibraltar Football Association lodged a formal complaint with UEFA on Thursday.

UEFA did not give a timetable for a possible case that could lead to players being suspended from Nations League matches in September.

At Euro 2024 in Germany, UEFA suspended Albanian player Mirlind Daku for two matches after leading fans in nationalist chants against Serbia and North Macedonia.

Morata completed his transfer from Atletico Madrid to AC Milan on Friday.
