ATLANTA – United States men's national team forward Tim Weah was sent off in the 18th minute of his team's Copa America group stage match against Panama on Thursday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
Weah extended his arm and hand towards the back of Panama defender Roderick Miller's neck in an off-the-ball incident. Weah was initially shown a yellow card, but central referee Ivan Barton changed it to a red after a video review.
Folarin Balogun scored for the USMNT four minutes later, but Panama's César Blackman tied it four minutes later.
Weah's expulsion is only the second of his career for club or country (the first was with Lille in 2022) and leaves him ineligible to play in the group stage final against Uruguay on Monday.
Weah's red card is the second-fastest red card from the start of the game by a USMNT player in the last 40 years and the earliest in a competitive match in that span.
Jimmy Conrad was sent off after 17 minutes of a friendly match against Honduras in 2010.
The U.S. team entered Thursday's match tied on points with Uruguay atop Group C after beating Bolivia in its tournament opener. Gregg Berhalter's team will face Uruguay in the group stage final on Monday.
