Tennessee unveils “Volunteer State” edition of smoke gray alternate uniforms

On a fall Saturday in Knoxville, Tennessee's usual orange at Neyland Stadium will be swapped for gray.

The Tennessee Volunteers unveiled the 2024 edition of their “Smokey Grey” uniform series over the weekend, and the latest in the line of alternate uniforms pays homage to the university's namesake.

The Volunteer State flag is prominently displayed on the uniform. References to the flag's three stars (symbolizing Tennessee's three Grand Divisions) are found on the shoulders, back of the helmet, and pants.

This will also be the first home uniform in program history to feature the state's name printed on the front of the jersey, instead of the traditional “Power T” logo.

The stadium, appropriately named the “Volunteer State,” will mark the third consecutive year Tennessee has sported a version of the smoky gray alternates. The Vols are 2-0 in smoky gray games since the uniform series returned after a hiatus in 2022, and 5-1 in such games since the original alternates were released in 2015.
