Tajik judoka refuses to shake hands with Israeli opponent at Paris Olympics, then withdraws due to injury


Tajik judoka Nurali Emomali caused a stir at the Paris Olympics on Sunday in the 66-kilogram event.

Emomali faced Israeli Baruch Shmailov in the round of 16 of Group B of the tournament. He refused to shake Shmailov's hand after his victory, according to Ynet News. He was also heard shouting “Allah Akbar” towards his Israeli opponent.

Emomali faced Japan's Hifumi Abe in the quarter-finals, but injured his left arm while trying to prevent a fall and was forced to withdraw from the tournament.

Serbia's Strahinja Bunčić advanced in the repechage portion of the event via walkover.

Abe defeated Brazilian Willian Lima in the final to claim his second gold medal in the event. Lima took home a silver medal, the first Olympic medal of his career. Gusman Kyrgyzbayev of Kazakhstan and Denis Vieru of Moldova took bronze medals.

Emomali was not the only judoka to refuse Shmailov's handshake during the event. Morocco's Abderrahmane Boushita also refused to do so after his defeat to Shamilov.

Israel is one of the largest judo teams at the Paris Olympics. The team had 12 Israeli competitors and four of them competed on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Algerian Messaoud Dris was eliminated from the competition after failing to complete the weight test the day before his match against Tohar Butbul. The International Judo Federation declared Butbul the winner by unanimous decision.
