The state of New Mexico and the former male basketball coach Greg Heiar reached an agreement on Friday for a lawsuit for unfair termination, their lawyers told ESPN.
Tiring in 2023, Heiar had accused the school of turning him into a “sacrifice lamb” for a litany of problems, including a novatada investigation, a shooting in self -defense that involves a player and academic problems.
In November 2022, the former Aggies player, Mike Peake, was attracted to the New Mexico University campus, where he shot and killed an alleged assailant after a group of men attacked him in retaliation for a previous fight. Peake was not accused in the incident.
But it was the beginning of a tumultuous year for the program and Heiar, who had been accused of leaving the city with his team after the shooting, since local authorities tried to talk to multiple players.
Later, an investigation of ride that involved accusations of sexual aggression and harassment led to a combined payment of $ 8 million to a couple of former players, Shak Odunewu and Deuce Benjamin, and one of his parents.
In February 2023, the School dismissed Heiar, a first-year chief coach, and canceled the rest of the 2022-23 season as the details of the novatada investigation came to light. Shortly after, Heiar sought an undetermined sum when he demanded the school for breach of contract and actions that were “voluntary, unbridled and with reckless contempt.”
“On behalf of our client, Greg Heiar, we are pleased to announce that an agreement has been reached in the arbitration of the Heiar coach and New Mexico's state university,” lawyers Ryan P. Danoff and Brett J. Danoff of Danoff Law Firm, PC, PC, in a statement to ESPN said. “The Heiar coach is pleased that this matter is now completely and finally resolved to our satisfaction, and excited to continue his career as a coach. The Heiar coach wishes NMSU, the male basketball program and Aggie's fans to the future.”
Last year, Heiar led Trinity Valley Community College in Athens, Texas, the National Junior College Championship and was appointed coach of the year of the National Junior College.
