UEFA has handed a one-match ban to Spanish internationals Alvaro Morata and Rodri for singing about a claim to sovereignty over Gibraltar during the European Championship celebrations.
Gibraltar's football association has lodged a complaint with UEFA after Morata, who captained Spain to glory at Euro 2024 in Germany, and Rodri led thousands of fans in chanting “Gibraltar is Spanish” at a celebration in Madrid on July 14.
UEFA's disciplinary body sanctioned both players for “failing to comply with the general principles of conduct, violating the basic rules of decent behaviour, using sporting events for demonstrations of a non-sporting nature and bringing the sport of football, and UEFA in particular, into disrepute”.
Both players will miss Spain's opening UEFA Nations League group match against Serbia on 5 September.
Gibraltar is located at the southern tip of Spain and has been a British Overseas Territory for over 300 years.
