South Africa rugby director suffers chemical burns in 'freak accident'

Rassie Erasmus, director of rugby South Africais recovering in a hospital after a freak accident left him with chemical burns.

Erasmus is “recovering in hospital after a medical procedure for chemical burns suffered in a freak accident using a powerful detergent product,” South African Rugby said in a statement on Saturday.

“He is otherwise in good health and hopes to return to full-time work within weeks.”

Erasmus is expected to coach the team as it prepares for the 2027 World Cup, according to the New York Post. He coached South Africa when it won its third World Cup in 2019.

Erasmus moved to the position of director before the tournament 2023, when Jacques Nienaber became coach, leading South Africa to another World Cup title.

Nienaber left SA rugby and became coach of Leinster in Ireland.

The Springboks will not play again until July, when they will play face ireland in a two-match series before facing Portugal in Bloemfontein on July 20.

“We are delighted to return to Bloemfontein for this historic match and are determined to continue to make our passionate fans proud,” Erasmus said in a statement on Friday.
