Texas A&M running back Rueben Owens is expected to miss the season after suffering a significant lower-body injury during a scrimmage on Saturday, sources told ESPN.
Owens produced 743 all-purpose yards and three touchdowns and earned SEC All-Freshman honors during his true freshman season in 2023.
The No. 44 overall recruit on the ESPN 300's 2023 list led SEC rookies in rushing yards (385) and kickoff return yards (249). The El Campo, Texas, native was poised to be one of the Aggies' top players as a sophomore under new coach Mike Elko.
“Rueben Owens suffered a lower leg injury during our scrimmage on Saturday,” Elko said in a statement Sunday. “I will discuss his injury at my upcoming press conference.”
Texas A&M returns its leading rusher, junior Amari Daniels, who gained 532 yards and scored six TDs last season, as well as junior running back Le'Veon Moss (484 rushing yards, five touchdowns).
The Aggies also added Stanford graduate transfer EJ Smith, son of Pro Football Hall of Fame running back Emmitt Smith, through the transfer portal during the offseason. Smith rushed for 557 yards and five touchdowns in 24 career games with the Cardinal.
Texas A&M opens its season Aug. 31 at home against Notre Dame, the No. 7 team in the American Football Coaches Association preseason poll.
