Simone Biles surpasses Shannon Miller to become most decorated Olympic gymnast in U.S. history

Simone Biles is running out of historic milestones to surpass.

The 27-year-old American gymnast led the United States to team gold in the women's gymnastics final on Tuesday, winning the medal with her floor routine. Italy took silver.

For Biles, Tuesday's gold medal marks her eighth Olympic medal overall, making her the most decorated Olympic gymnast in U.S. history, having surpassed “The Magnificent Seven” star Shannon Miller for the most career Olympic medals.

Miller last competed at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, when she also led the United States to team gold. Miller also won an individual gold on the balance beam that year, which were her only two Olympic gold medals.

But Biles' Olympic gold medal total now stands at five. She already held the record for most golds won by an American gymnast, having won four at the Rio Olympics.

If Biles has a similar performance in Paris, she could try to break the all-time world record for gold medals for a female gymnast. That record is currently held by former Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina, who has nine in total.

With five, Biles has a chance to catch Latynina in Paris. Biles qualified for four individual event finals: all-around, vault, balance beam and floor exercise.

If she wins medals in all those events, gold or not, she will tie one other American for total career medals. Former track and field athlete Allyson Felix is the only non-swimming American woman with more Olympic medals than Biles, with 11.

Biles is one step away from achieving this record despite her performance at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics being almost a failure after she withdrew from the competition due to a case of “muscle twists.” After that, she only came home with a team silver medal thanks to her teammates.

There was no guarantee Biles would compete again in Paris this summer after withdrawing in Tokyo because of her age. At 27, she is the oldest gymnast to win an Olympic gold medal and five years older than Aly Raisman, who previously held the record for oldest gold medalist.

But Biles returned to the international scene last summer at the World Championships in Antwerp, Belgium, where she became the most decorated gymnast in world history with her 37th medal at an international competition. She earned automatic qualification for Paris and is now in position to try to surpass some of the last remaining historic thresholds in what will likely be her final Olympics.
