Sheffield United came from behind to beat Wrexham 4-2 on Tuesday to bring the newly promoted League One side's Carabao Cup campaign to a swift end.
The hosts were by far the better side throughout the game at Bramall Lane but fell behind against the run of play in the 29th minute when William Boyle scored from close range following a corner.
Reality caught up with the visitors after that, though, with Auston Trusty heading just over the line to level before the break and Lewis Brunt turning Rhian Brewster's cross into his own net early in the second half to put Sheffield United ahead.
A foul on Anis Ben Slimane in the box sent Brewster to the penalty spot, but his spot-kick attempt was deflected only for Louie Marsh to slot the rebound past Wrexham goalkeeper Callum Burton to all but seal the win for United.
Ben Slimane added Sheffield's fourth goal, scoring his first for the club since joining in 2023, and Sebastian Revan scored a consolation goal for Wrexham just before the final whistle.
It has been a remarkable few seasons for Wrexham, who have been promoted in consecutive years, first to League Two after the 2022-23 season and then to League One last year.
The team made a victorious return to the third tier of English football on Saturday, beating Wycombe Wanderers 3-2 in their first League One game in 20 years.
There is recent history between the two sides, who contested a tense FA Cup fourth-round replay in 2023, which Sheffield United won with a pair of extra-time goals. Including Tuesday's result, it is 41 years since the Welsh side beat United.
