Serbia threatens to leave Euro 2024 over alleged fan chants

Serbia has threatened to leave Euro 2024 if UEFA does not take action following alleged chanting between Croatia and Albania fans.

A section of the fans attending the 2-2 draw in Hamburg on Wednesday could be heard taking part in offensive chants directed at Serbia.

Jovan Surbatovic, general secretary of the Serbian Football Association, has suggested that Serbia may not continue in the tournament in Germany unless the European governing body imposes sufficient punishments.

Serbia rescued a 1-1 draw with Slovenia in their second Group C match on Thursday in Munich. Hours after the match, UEFA said it had asked an internal investigator to look into the allegations.

UEFA said a disciplinary inspector was appointed “to carry out an investigation into possible racist and/or discriminatory conduct by fans that allegedly occurred.”

UEFA did not give a timetable for the case, which is unlikely to be resolved before Serbia's third and potentially final match, Tuesday against Denmark.

“What happened is scandalous and we will ask UEFA for sanctions, even if it means not continuing the competition,” Surbatovic told Serbian state broadcaster RTS.

“We will demand that UEFA punish the federations of both teams.

“We do not want to participate in that, but if UEFA does not punish them, we will think about how we will proceed.”

In a separate statement on Thursday, the Serbian Federation condemned the “disgraceful racist behavior” of Albanian and Croatian fans and said the match should have been suspended as soon as the chanting started.

“It has been a long time since we have seen such an insult to a nation at sporting events with cries that they should be killed,” the statement added.

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin was with Serbian officials in Munich for Thursday's match against his home country, Slovenia.

On Wednesday, UEFA canceled the press credentials of Kosovo journalist Arlind Sadiku for allegedly making a nationalist gesture towards Serbian fans during the match against England on Sunday in Gelsenkirchen.

A statement issued by UEFA said: “UEFA can confirm that a journalist had his accreditation canceled due to misconduct at the UEFA EURO 2024 match between Serbia and England on 16 June 2024.”

On Monday, the Serbian Football Federation was charged by UEFA after its supporters displayed a banner that “conveyed a provocative message inappropriate for a sporting event” and for throwing objects inside the stadium.

That accusation came after the Kosovo Football Federation complained to UEFA that “Serb fans displayed political, chauvinistic and racist messages against Kosovo” during their 1-0 loss to England.

“We were punished for isolated cases and our fans behaved much better than the others,” Surbatovic said.

“A fan was punished for racist insults and we don't want it to be attributed to others. We Serbs are gentlemen and we have an open heart.”
