Rory Mcilroy beat JJ Spaun in the playoffs to win the players championship

Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. It turns out that Rory Mcilroy only needed three good changes to win the players championship on Monday in a playoff about JJ Spaun.

Mcilroy launched its opening exit blow and hit a launch wedge at torque 5 16 to establish Birdie, and then found the green island in pair 3 17 with an iron 9 in a cold and crepitant wind in TPC Sawgrass that effectively gave it a second title in the richest golf event.

Spaun posed on his iron 8 until he heard the groans of the spectators aligned behind the green 17. His ball crossed the wind and sailed over the green to the water, which led to a triple flag that ended with their hopes.

“It was a great shot … perfect if it were the right distance,” he said. “I simply couldn't believe it was long. It's just not my luck of gust.”

Mcilroy became the eighth multiple winner of the players championship, since he also won in 2019. And it is the first time in his career he has won twice in the Masters. He won the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am last month.

The first three -hole playoff in 10 years in the players was caused by a four -hour rain delay on Sunday. Mcilroy had to make a 4 feet putt on the 72. Span hole had a 30 -foot putt birdie for the victory that stopped centimeters.

Mcilroy, disappointed and had lost an advantage of three shots in the nine from behind, looked towards the playoff in saying: “Make five good swings tomorrow morning and do this.”

The 336 yards trip on 16. The launch wedge to just within 35 feet. The 9-Hierro that found dry land. That is all I needed to beat Span and claim the $ 4.5 million prize of the $ 25 million bag.

“Those three swings were basically what the championship decided,” Mcilroy said. “I feel that JJ has had a great week. Make it ends that way for him was difficult to see.”

It was a reminiscence of a 2008 playoff between Sergio García and Paul Goydos, when 17 was used in sudden death. Garcia hit the green. The Goydos fell short in the water, and there is no more lonely walk than to the fall zone knowing that it is over.

Mcilroy now has 39 victories worldwide, and much impulse on his side with teachers a month away. A green jacket is everything that keeps Mcilroy of the Grand Slam race, the most exclusive golf club. He has not won a specialty since 2014.

The players championship is reputed to be the best option for an important one, and Mcilroy achieved Sawgras despite losing a little more than half of the streets this week.

“I feel that I am now a better player than ever, and it is good to see that the fruits of my work are worth it,” Mcilroy said.

Spaun won $ 2,725,000 for its finalist and moved to No. 25 in the world ranking, high enough to be secured a place in the masters.
