Rookie phenom Paul Skenes was pulled from a no-hitter for the second time this season

Paul Skenes had another chance to make history on Thursday, but again he wasn't given the chance to finish the job.

Making just his 11th major league start, the rookie phenom was pulled after seven hitless innings against the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday.

Skenes struck out 11, walked one and hit one batter on his 99 pitches.

It was the second time he had thrown a no-hitter this season, having thrown a six-inning no-hitter in just his second major league start, but he had 100 pitches in that outing.

His Pittsburgh Pirates were leading 1-0 when he was pulled.

Skenes' last two starts have seen a new career-high in throws: 102 on June 29, then 107 in his last start.

Skenes needed just six pitches to sit down again in the seventh inning, but considering his strikeout prowess, it's quite likely he would have needed more than 120 pitches to finish the job.

Mets star Francisco Lindor says Pete Alonso has “earned the right” to “maximize his money” in free agency

The Pirates selected him No. 1 overall last year, and after dominating the minors, they called him up in May; now, he's already in the conversation for the best pitcher in the game.

Earlier this month, Skenes became the first pitcher to be selected to an All-Star Game the year after being drafted.

With his performance on Thursday, he lowered his ERA to 1.90; however, he has not yet pitched enough innings to qualify for the ERA title (one inning pitched per team game), and likely won't. Skenes has 59.1 innings pitched this year, and would need to finish with 162.0 on the year to qualify.

However, it should be noted that Cy Young Award voters can still vote for him if they deem him worthy.

He has struck out 11.8 batters per nine innings, the second-best mark in baseball among those who have pitched at least 50 innings. His ERA is also the second-best mark given the demand, behind only Reynaldo Lopez's 1.71.
