Rodri injury: Manchester City confirm 'ligament' injury amid tests

Manchester City have confirmed that midfielder Rodri suffered a “ligament” injury to his right knee during Sunday's draw with Arsenal.

A source told ESPN that the extent of Rodri's injury is unclear and there is a chance he will opt out of surgery. As ESPN reported on Monday, initial scans pointed to a torn anterior cruciate ligament that would likely sideline the Spanish midfielder for the rest of the season.

However, depending on the final decision taken by the medical staff, Rodri could be out for between five and eight months.

City said in a statement: “The midfielder travelled to Spain for a specialist consultation this week, following initial tests in Manchester. Assessment is continuing to determine the full extent of the injury and the expected prognosis.

“Everyone at the club wishes him a speedy recovery and [Man City] “He will bring you regular updates on his rehabilitation.”

He is expected to compete with Real Madrid striker Vinícius Júnior for the Ballon d'Or and his injury will be a significant blow to City, who are seeking an unprecedented fifth successive Premier League title.

“We will have a good season,” Guardiola said after the Carabao Cup victory over Watford.

“I have a lot of faith in my players. I have a duty to find a solution. They are irreplaceable when you don't play with the best player in the world. My duty is to find a solution, to be competitive like I was many years ago and to continue being there.”

Rodri was substituted in the 21st minute of last weekend's clash after falling to the ground and clutching his knee while making a run towards the near post following a corner.

John Stones scored a 98th-minute equaliser to secure City a 2-2 draw against Arsenal at the Etihad Stadium. The result kept Pep Guardiola's side top of the table after having picked up 13 points from their first five games.

Rodri was named player of the tournament at Euro 2024 after playing a key role in Spain's second title.

Last Tuesday, Rodri suggested that players are “close” to going on strike due to concerns about their increasing workload amid the expansion of club and international tournaments.

The 28-year-old made 63 appearances for club and country last season in a campaign that did not end until the Euro 2024 final on July 14.

City travel to St James' Park to play Newcastle United on Saturday.

The Champions League campaign continues next week with an away game against Slovan Bratislava.
