Cincinnati Reds second baseman Matt McLain is being evaluated for a shoulder injury that could require surgery.
Manager David Bell said Wednesday that “all options are on the table” after an MRI on McLain's left shoulder.
Bell said those options include surgery for the second-year infielder, who will likely begin the season on the injured list.
McLain, a first-round pick in the 2021 draft, is the latest Reds position player to be sidelined in recent weeks.
Cincinnati will also be without center fielder TJ Friedl, who is out indefinitely with a broken wrist, and infield prospect Noelvi Marte, who was suspended 80 games earlier this month after testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance.
McLain, 24, made his major league debut in 2023 and hit .290 with 16 home runs, 50 RBI and 14 steals in 89 games.
