AMHERST, Mass. — A fistfight between two players broke out Sunday at a Rutgers women's soccer game against UMass.
Punches were thrown as the two players tangled, engaged in a shoving match and then fell to the ground.
Rutgers senior Gia Girman was fouled in the 55th minute. As she was getting up from the ground, UMass senior Ashley Lamond appeared to try to pick up the ball near Girman's feet.
The players began pushing each other, eventually throwing punches and pulling each other's hair as they fell to the ground. Teammates intervened and separated the players.
Both received red cards, so the teams played with 10 players for the last 35 minutes.
In those final minutes, four yellow cards were shown, two for each team.
UMass won the game 1-0.
Rutgers' game summary noted that there was a “fight” in the 55th minute. A school spokesman said the athletic department was aware of the fight but had no immediate comment.
